The Teochews are masters indeed of this dish with many having a meal of it at least weekly. It is made on order so be prepared to wait a while as the queues are long at popular stalls but the wait is well rewarded when the flavors are slowly savored.
This are my 3 faves and am very glad that the original owners have made great effort to pass on their culinary skills to the next Generation.
1. Tai Wah Pork Noodle
Tai Wah Pork Noodle is located within Hong Lim Food Center at #02-16 Blk 531A Upper Cross Street & appx 300m East of Chinatown MRT Station (NE4/DT19).
Opening Hours:
Opens daily
8am-7,30pm
“The 3rd Generation now runs this stall and he does a great job too. Their Bak Chor mee sets the bar for this dish as the mix of vinegar, pork lard, chili and noodle are done just right with fresh minced pork, crispy fried sole fish & wanton. The family is close knit and when the father comes, you can see the strong bond between the father-mentor and son-pupil.”
2. Seng Kee Mushroom Minced Pork Noodle
Seng Kee Mushroom Minced Pork Noodle is located within Serangoon Gardens Food Center at #01-37 Blk 49A Serangoon Garden Way & appx 2km North of Lorong Chuan MRT Station (CC14).
Opening Hours:
Opens daily (except Sun & Mon)
7.30am-1.30pm
“The soup flavored with fish maw plus use of fresh liver, mushrooms and slice pork atop the well blanched mee kia or mee pok sauteed with nice tasting vinegar and chilli is why many have diligently followed this stall from Changi to Eunos and now to Serangoon Gardens.
Great that the owner has mentored his son-in-law to takeover to continue the great tradition of this iconic Teochew dish.”
3. Li Yuan Mee Pok
Li Yuan Mee Pok is located at Rong Fa Coffee Shop Blk 710 Clementi West Street 2 & appx 1.7km South of Clementi MRT Station (EW23).
Opening Hours:
Opens daily (except Mon)
8.30am-3pm
“Started by a Japanese PR and his family, their version incorporates the Japanese Char Siew and delightfully sinful pork lard into an already traditional great tasting Bak Chor Mee.
I hope the high standards remain as the owner is busy starting up new new branches in Malaysia and Japan.”
